FAQ

What is How to Decorate & Stage all about?
For over 40 years, people have paid me to do what I love. That experience led to the founding of The Decorating and Staging Academy,(The-DSA)  providing professional level hands-on training to aspring and established decorators and stagers around the world with core foundation classes in decorating, staging, color, and marketing.  I created How to Decorate and Stage to take those core classes to new levels with professional and personal development classes. Whether you are Pro or a DIY decorator…there are classes for you.
Following are other frequent question. Don’t see an answer to your question…simply send an email to joanne@thejlwcompany.com or call us at 814-440-3044.  We welcome your calls.

Do I need experience to start a Decorating or Staging Business?

Absolutely not! What you need is talent, a strong work ethic, the willingness to persevere and round out all of that with systematic and practical education. Top that off with a smart marketing and business plan (we can help with that also) and you are ready to rock the world.

What skills will help me succeed?

It begins with natural talent, a good eye, an ability to visualize…call it what you may, you need it

Willingness to appreciate styles that aren’t your favorites

Understanding core design and staging fundamentals

Communication Skills-yep, you need to look your clients right in the eye and dazzle them

Strong Work Ethic-this can help overcome other shortcomings

Staying on top of color and design trends

  1. How much money can I make? How many hours do I need to work?

It’s entirely up to you! Any business requires a strong work ethic, people skills, smart marketing plan and the desire to succeed. The bottom line, your business can be as big as you want. Even in today’s tough economy, the decorating and staging industry continue to flourish.

Are How to Decorate and Stage classes certified?

The decorating and staging industries are not licensed or monitored in any way. Quite frankly, anyone can claim their class is certified. These certifications are proprietary certifications, not industry certifications.  The question is…are the certifications and training endorsed and/or recognized by industry associations?  Most of the classes we offer at How to Decorate and Stage are actually Professional and Personal Development classes. If you are considering a Certification class, reach out to us and we will let you know if you are making a good decision.  We currently recommend the classes at The Decorating and Staging Academy and IAHSP. The only certification class currently offered is our Confident Color System.  I created and wrote this class and it is the color class of choice for The-DSA and IAHSP.

The training created by How to Decorate and Stage, Division of The JLW Company, is requested and offered by many companies and associations including WCAA, IDS, RESA, IAHSP, WFCP, and more. Even more important than the certification is the quality of the curriculum, trainers and their respected standing in the industry at large.  Call just about anyone in the decorating or staging industry, they know or have heard of JoAnne Lenart-Weary.

Do I need certifications or a design degree?

Home Staging and Interior Decorating are unlicensed services that do not require any formal education. However, education and ongoing learning are the core of your success. Education and experience will help you gain credibility providing you with confidence and an advanced level of professionalism.

What questions should I ask when considering a Certification class?
  • If you are considering a certification class, my first recommendation is The Decorating and Staging Academy. The-DSA has the most experienced training team in the country in blended curriculums of decorating and staging. There are other training programs that reach a level of excellence as well.
  • Ask if their learning materials and curriculum is updated annually. If they are using the same training program for more than 2 years, they are doing you a disservice.
  • Do they offer Ongoing Support and Educational Opportunities?
  • Are you provided with Virtual  Support Materials?
  • Do their classes include hands-on exercises?
  • Is one on one coaching available after your training class?
  • Will you receive a Complimentary Listing on their directory for first year after a certification class?
I don't want a business...I just love decorating? Do you have any classes for me?

All of our design, color, and staging classes are great learning tools for both the PRO and DIY decorator.  As a DIY, you may not be as interested in our business and marketing classes but check them out also if you have even an inkling of turning your talents into a buisness.  In the meantime, take advantage of one of our free classes and ebooks.  You might then decide to take advantage of some of our other classes.

What Certification Classes do you recommend?

There are a number of certification programs offered in both live and online formats.  Check out the questions to ask above to ensure you are gathering information.

At this moment, we recommend The Decorating and Staging Academy, because they are the longest running dual certification program out there. There curriculum is updated annually, the instructors have real life experience, and they support their students long after the training is over.
